Did you know that your brain changes as you read?
Watch the video to see what researchers at Emory University discovered.
My favorite part was learning that stories with a strong narrative arc and a clear lead character actually alter brain connectivity. Basically, you slip into the role of the lead character, because your brain responds as if it’s been transported into the body of the protagonist. Our brains react as if we are living the actions of the protagonist.
The brain shows heightened arousal during the most exciting parts of a book! I’m not surprised by that one, but it’s now a scientific fact.
This is virtual reality at it’s finest!
Wow! Who knew? Not me.
This bit of research was very cool to learn about, and it doesn’t stop there.
Other researchers have taken this aspect of brain function and focused on the health benefits of reading.
The Top Five Benefits of Reading:
1)Helps prevent Alzheimer’s disease
4)Increases your vocabulary
5)Develops your imagination
The brain needs to be exercised like all muscles to stay healthy. Just 20 minutes a day can have a huge impact on your life, so make reading a part of your plan of fitness for life!
I’ve added it to my routine because I’ve recognized how reading helps me be a better version of myself. It’s so important that I’ve started implementing what I call story-based soul retreats! I encourage you to do the same.
Stay updated with what I share about story-based soul retreats by joining my community of readers and getting regular musings on this and other topics. Each month I give away a FREE book to keep you supplied with good stories for your soul retreat moments.
As an added bonus, I’ll get you started with your own story-based soul retreat with a gift of chapter one of BOUNTY HUNTRESS!
Let me know what you read and how you create your own story-based soul retreats! I’m always open to finding new books to read and ways to turn it into a retreat.
Until next time,
